Bowe Family: Early 2013

January 18th, 2014

We’ve had a few opportunities to capture of my co-worker’s family and thought that maybe we should blog a couple instances! Little Nolan, and his little brother Marshall are always so much fun to take photos of, and lucky for us, a great home cooked dinner is usually included in the deal! You’ll see in […]

You’ll see in the near future a more recent shoot, but for now, enjoy these photos!

A Start, an End, and a New Begining…

November 1st, 2013

Tomorrow marks the end of a chapter in the book of Snap.Grin Photography (if someone had the time to write a book about us…) Many have heard this story, but here it is again: Back in 2008, fresh off the high of buying our first home, my wife (then fiancé), and I were planning our […]

MengGoodbye-1

Tomorrow marks the end of a chapter in the book of Snap.Grin Photography (if someone had the time to write a book about us…)

Many have heard this story, but here it is again:

Back in 2008, fresh off the high of buying our first home, my wife (then fiancé), and I were planning our own wedding for the following year- and subsequently our honeymoon as well. Having settled on a trip to Paris and Rome, I thought to my self, “I can’t just bring a simple point and shoot camera!” So I purchased my first Digital SLR- a reliable Canon Rebel XSi with a kit 18-55mm lens, a couple batteries, and a 8GB compact flash card. Auto-mode became my best friend.

Soon we began hosting house parties that saw 30-45 people dancing, playing Rockband, enjoying each others company, and making use of the supplied libations.

This I how the first chapter began:

Thinking back, I am sure it wasn’t as dramatic and straight forward as I’ll say I remember it, but this way sounds much better, and would make a much cooler Hollywood movie someday, maybe directed by Scorsese? Anyways, as I stood in my kitchen, up on a chair, taking photos of friends dancing in my kitchen, taking shots, making fools of themselves, a group of familiar faces walked into my house, escorting in a few unfamiliar, new faces, one of which was slightly covered by thick rimmed glasses, with a Sony camera in his hand, a custom leather strap, and a metal Minolta 50mm 1.8 lens.

This was Mr. Meng Yang.

We began talking about cameras, photography, the expenses around it, and how we would both love to own the very best of all the “needed” accessories. Meng had already invested time in understanding his equipment beyond Auto, so I had so many questions.

Months later we were still talking about photography, completely obsessed of course. We would send each other links to new lenses, and links to online tutorials and photographer’s sites. We realized we wanted an excuse to further indulge.

Weddings.

Snap.Grin was born of a couple of techy-gadget nerds, with a hidden creative side (and a reference to a popular Monty Python sketch, know what I mean, know what I mean, nudge nudge, wink wink).

After countless actuations, from several different cameras, through different iterations of lenses, I could never recreate the fun I have had shooting with Meng. Thanks to our mixing of encouragement and passion, we successfully captured so many weddings and other events together, putting smiles on so many faces, and ensuring new friends would never forget the most important days of their lives.

As you all have seen through facebook, instagram, twitter, behind-airplane-streamer, this site, etc, Meng has done what few of us could; he has packed up his cameras and lenses, closet full of shoes and flannels, and kayak, and moved from family and friends to pursue advancement in his career. For this we most certainly commend him.

Without Meng, there would have been no Snap.Grin Photography. Without Meng, I certainly wouldn’t have pursued what has become one of the most challenging but fulfilling aspects of my life.  I personally have learned so much thanks to him, and not only gained a business partner, but a brother.

Tomorrow will be the last Wedding Meng and I capture together as Snap.Grin Photography.

With all of that being said, Snap.Grin will carry on, doing justice to what Meng and I started. My wife, Khanh, with camera in hand, will work to fill Meng’s shoes (probably similar size- Khanh and small feet… that is, if he left a pair here in MN).  I have absolutely no doubt that with her impeccable photography style,  warm and inviting personality, and incredible work ethic, Snap.Grin will go places we hadn’t thought of.

KhanhHello-1

Please join me in thanking Meng for all his contributions to Snap.Grin, and celebrating the next chapter, welcoming Khanh to the Snap.Grin Team.

Within the next few weeks, I will be updating the site, posting the past years work, new packages and options, and all of the work still to come!

Hey folks!  It’s Meng.  Just wanted to let everyone know I’ve take a new position with my day job in Helena, Montana.  Sooooo…what this means is that I will no longer be shooting with Snap.Grin Photography after this year.  I know guys, I know…it’s a sad day, but you’ll all pull through ;).

I just wanted to personally thank EVERYONE who has ever let me take a photo of them to get Snap.Grin to where it is now.  Seriously, you guys kick ass!  Without you guys, we wouldn’t be around at all.  It started with two guys at a house party taking photos of friends to telling photographic stories of people’s most important day of their lives.

Fret not for Snap.Grin will be continuing on with Mike.  He will have an announcement soon on his new partner in crime (some may already know but let’s still act surprised).

I will be shipping off to Helena, Montana in early October.  I will definitely continue to shoot once I’m settled in (I mean, it’s pretty gorgeous out there aside from the horse parking at Walmart).  You Minnesota fans can follow what I’ll be up to in Montana at http:\\theflannel.net and http:\\facebook.com\theflannel.net

So this is my farewell for now.  Nothing is permanent in life, so who knows where I’ll end up next!

P.S. I’ll be having a going away party on October 5th and the Snap.Grin Family is invited, so swing by and say “see you later”.

Date: October 5th
Time: 7pm
Where: Red Ginger China Bistro
5999 Rice Creek Parkway Suite #102
Shoreview, MN 55126

I'll miss you guys!

P.P.S. This is the real reason I’m moving (props goes to Montana Wild for the video).
